Updated Message from Assemblyman Gary Schaer

Thank G-d, the vast majority of our community has had their power restored. Unfortunately, there are a few areas of Passaic, including downtown and parts of Third Ward that remain without power. As has been said often, and rightfully so, it is painfully difficult to celebrate others good fortune when your family is cold and without power. I understand that reality. I remain in hourly contact with PSEG and my colleagues in trying to prioritize power restoration to those without. All of my colleagues locally, in Passaic County and in the State are working hard to correct the situation. We are limited to the information we are provided, as PSEG is limited by the number of personnel and equipment available. We were able to prioritize the local yeshivas so that their power was restored over the weekend so that school could open on Monday. We were also able to restore power Monday evening to Main Avenue and, as a result, activate the gas stations in the area. Although fuel availability remains an ongoing concern, we were able to ensure gas to all Hatzolah volunteers and all health care workers at St Mary’s Hospital and other neighboring institutions. Many people have complained that they don’t see PSEG and related trucks on their blocks. Please understand that in many cases, the problem may originate miles away. There appears little rhyme or reason to power grids and which homes are included in particular grids. Many have also been concerned when told by PSEG workers that their homes are not due for repair; this is simply not the case. Power outages remain throughout the state. Further, and as the Governor has said, there is no truth to reports than any repair teams were turned away because they are not union members. Our Public Works Department has begun, where possible, to plan for the upcoming storm on Wednesday. We are naturally concerned about possible effects to the area. Also, although there have been no incidents to date, we have increased police patrols in all areas. Additionally, Passaic’s emergency shelter at 33 Passaic Street has centralized services for those in need. We have sought and received emergency assistance from the American Red Cross. I know that this situation remains very difficult for the families who are affected, and if anyone has any specific questions, please contact my office at 973 249 3665, or AsmSchaer@NJLEG.org. Please don’t hesitate to call if we can be of assistance. My sincere appreciation for your patience and understanding as we get through this together. Gary Schaer
